Nedbank has become the latest South African bank to launch its own mobile network, Nedbank Connect

South Africa’s banking sector is increasingly becoming the new frontier for mobile connectivity, with the launch of Nedbank Connect, the latest mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) to hit the market.

Nedbank has officially launched its mobile operator, Nedbank Connect, making it one of the latest of the “Big Four” banks to join the telecommunications sector. The service is currently live for Nedbank customers via the Nedbank Money App and Online Banking.

The offering provides a range of services designed to integrate with the bank’s existing financial ecosystem.

Nedbank Connect currently features four pre-set plans, with data ranging from 3GB at R169 per month to 20GB at R499 per month. Customers who aren’t ready for a monthly commitment can opt for a prepaid SIM or eSIM, with bundles available from R5.00 to R30.00.

The MVNO also provides a host of attractive features, including Greenbacks airtime rewards which can reach up to R300 depending on a customer’s rewards level, and the ability to convert existing Greenbacks into airtime. All new SIMs come with R100 of free airtime. The service also includes international roaming, 24/7 call centre support, and unlimited calls of up to 60 minutes every month, with in-branch services also available.

Nedbank Connect is currently an exclusive offering for Nedbank customers. Prospective users must first open a Nedbank account before they can sign up for a Nedbank Connect account. The setup process involves a once-off initiation fee, plus an additional R99 for SIM delivery. Monthly billing commences once the SIM is delivered and activated.

Customers also have the option to port their existing number, with the process taking between 24 and 48 hours.

The Rise of Bank-Led MVNOs

Nedbank is by no means the first bank to enter this space.

The South African market has become a hotbed for this MVNO business model, with First National Bank (FNB), Capitec, and Standard Bank all having established successful MVNOs.

FNB Connect, a pioneer in this field, has been operating since 2015, while Capitec Connect has seen rapid growth since its launch, becoming a dominant player with a significant customer base. Standard Bank Mobile, now rebranded as Standard Bank Connect, has also been a key participant.

This trend highlights a strategic shift where banks are leveraging their large, pre-existing assets, such as customer bases and trusted brand reputations to offer bundled financial and telecommunication services, thereby increasing customer loyalty and creating new revenue streams.
