DIRECTV Launches MVNO Service in Colombia
DIRECTV Expands its Ecosystem, Launching Mobile Service as an MVNO.
DIRECTV has officially launched its new wireless service, DIRECTV Móvil, in Colombia. Operating as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) with nationwide coverage through an alliance with Tigo.
The MVNO launch is part of DIRECTV’s broader strategy to diversify its offerings in Colombia, which already include pay television, streaming, and financial services. The company’s entry into the mobile market capitalizes on the country’s growing telecommunications sector, which saw a significant increase to over 92.5 million mobile connections by the end of the first quarter of 2025, a jump of four million from the previous year.
A Strategic MVNO Alliance with Tigo
To enter the market quickly and efficiently, DIRECTV is using an MVNO model. Instead of building its own network infrastructure, DIRECTV Móvil will use Tigo’s established 4G and 5G networks. This partnership guarantees national coverage while allowing DIRECTV to focus on providing a seamless customer experience.
According to Alejandro Nigro, DIRECTV’s country manager in Colombia, “With DIRECTV Móvil, we take another step forward in our strategy of diversification and proximity to the customer. We want to be that ally that accompanies Colombians not only in their entertainment but also in their daily connectivity.”
Tapping into a Growing Market Segment
DIRECTV Móvil’s launch reflects the significant growth and dynamism of the MVNO segment in Colombia. According to recent projections, mobile virtual network operators represent between 7% and 8% of the total lines in the country. MVNOs such as Virgin Mobile and Móvil Éxito have already captured a significant portion of this market, demonstrating the potential for new players.
Other operators include ETB, Liwa, Lov Telecomunicaciones, and Suma Móvil. This competitive landscape demonstrates the strong potential for new players who can offer flexible and value-driven options to consumers.
DIRECTV’s entry is a direct bet on this thriving segment, offering a service that promises competitive pricing and national coverage. The company’s strategy is to appeal to a growing number of users who seek more flexible and value-driven options than those traditionally offered by the market’s largest operators.
Integrated Services and Future Prospects
What sets DIRECTV Móvil apart is its goal of integrating mobile service with the company’s existing ecosystem. This approach is designed to foster customer loyalty by providing a unified experience that combines connectivity and entertainment. Users can manage all their services, from mobile to streaming content on platforms like DGO (DIRECTV GO), through a single digital environment.
The company’s success will depend on its ability to provide stable and reliable service that lives up to its promise of quality. With its new mobile business, DIRECTV is not just expanding its presence in Colombia—it’s aiming to become a comprehensive service provider that connects content, technology, and entertainment.
